Why is Euclid ’s technology so revolutionary?
Right now content providers and users alike are wrestling with the problems inherent in how video is compressed and distributed across networks, particularly across the Internet.  Downloading a relatively small video, say 50 MB, takes over four minutes, even using a broadband connection.  Downloading a full-length movie takes hours. And uploads take significantly longer.

Narrow band networks, like those used for cell phones, have even more problems sending and receiving video content.  Plus mobile devices themselves are constrained in the amount of data they can store and receive.
EuclidVision’s objective is to solve all these problems by reducing the transmission time and the storage space for video without reducing quality.  In the company’s R&D lab, it currently produces a 460% or greater compression improvement over MPEG-4, the standard for digital video, or a 600% improvement over MPEG-2, across a range of video types.

Today, the company is focused on creating a new video codec; essentially productizing its technological advancements, within the current hardware, software and network infrastructure deployed around the world today.  This productization will demonstrate the immediate benefits that EuclidVision can deliver for video compression and transmission across the internet and to mobile devices like cell phones and PDAs.

How does Euclid ’s technology work?
Current compression technology does not look at objects; it just applies a constant rate of compression to the entire frame or picture. Some compression technologies use shortcuts to achieve higher compression ratios; but these methods result in videos that look terrible, and include removing frames from the video, reducing the size of frames, or lowering the resolution or picture quality of the video overall.

Euclid Discoveries has created a totally new form of video compression, called EuclidVision.  Using advances in several fields, including Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, EuclidVision can differentiate between the objects and sub-object in the video (like a face, or an eye or nose) and the background. The technology then applies new, patented compression techniques to these objects and sub-objects.

What are the current (and future) applications of Euclid ’s technology?
EuclidVision technology achieves significant compression and transmission improvements for a wide range of typical video applications, including social networking videos, feature films, newscasts, video conferencing, and TV shows.

EuclidVision will continue to advance the technology to address additional applications. These applications include the ability to offer users the equivalent of 100 GB of video on a 10 GB iPod, HDTV video conferencing, Internet delivered TV, and HD video streamed to a mobile device in real time.

Is Euclid ’s technology patent protected?
Yes.  Euclid Discoveries’ patents cover the full range of technical and business applications of the technology.  Euclid Vision can be used for storage, enhancement, refinement, feature extraction, compression, coding, and transmission of video data.  The company has filed over 60 patent applications in the United States and in key countries around the world.  Euclid’s patents cover all of the discoveries behind the technology, creating a barrier to entry for potential competitors and preventing anyone from using the company’s intellectual property (IP) without permission..

Why are the patents important?
Technology firms must be able to demonstrate uncontested control over their intellectual property or risk having their businesses pulled out from under them. This is even more important for technology startups, since these firms’ primary assets and therefore financial value, is the technology itself.  Although documenting discoveries can consume precious resources for early-stage companies, this process serves as the best insurance against litigation, theft and infringement when the technologies are ultimately brought to market.

To address this necessity, Euclid Discoveries has devoted considerable resources developing its “Knowledge Portal”, and a proprietary Task Management System (TMS) which documents all work assignments, deliverables and key milestones in the technology development process. This Knowledge Portal and TMS are critical components in the company’s IP management, and serves to protecting Euclid Discoveries’ intellectual property.
